This is what he does and he has probably reviewed more equipment and listened to and lived with more than most of us. The fact he has equipment some of us can only dream about, is because he is in the business, not because he is a trust fund baby. I have personally know Tonepub for a long time and he an honest and straight up guy. They answered the question without bias and without any agenda from a retail perspective. I think the advice some have offered is fair and honest like MacGyver, Dave and TonePub. Would you tell someone to put a Corvette engine in a Corvair because it is a great engine, fast, and in production today even though the person invest $500? Would anyone here tell Steve that they thought a recording he had done had too much processing and that he was doing what he wanted and not what was asked? I think not. Anyone with half a brain can make a statement like "buy this model for lots of money" because it is great.
This is a very narrow minded advice and comes from a place with lack of tact and knowledge of what is asked. What happens if he decides that CD's are not the way to go then the money invested is lost on resale and not only a poor investment choice but will probably turn him off and away from this hobby. Why would anyone recommend a piece of equipment costing more than the initial investment. He did state that he has a vintage system and that he has not invested a lot of money at this point. If pcpinfo had invested in 1000's in a system then it becomes a question of what features he desires and how much he has to spend. Another nice benefit of a DAC is that it does not just have to serve as the sound engine for a disc, it can also be connected to the digital output of other sources such as a computer soundcard, a satellite receiver, cable box, etc. So even though the digital section isn't the latest, having that nice analog section is like upgrading to a top quality preamp. One thing that makes even older DACs (the higher end units) still rather nice sounding is their use of very high quality analog output stages. You can connect the output of any CD player or DVD player with a digital output to the input of the DAC and you'll get the sound quality of the DAC. A DAC (D/A converter) has no moving or degradable parts and can last much longer without any problems than a player. Short of that, you could use any new DVD player as a transport and a very high quality, used DAC.
